I found this extremely interesting and informative work done by Dr Mary Born who specializes in Herbal Medicine and decided to share this with you all. She has compiled all the research done in the recent past on Turmeric and has written a paper on the same topic. I have reproduced

Turmeric Powder

a gist of her findings in the following paragraphs.

You might be familiar with the essential Ingredient in all curries if you’ve ever eaten Indian food. Turmeric is found in curry powder and is one of the favored spices indigenous to India. When you get done reading this article you will understand why, in India, ground turmeric is considered a ‘Holy Powder’! This spice is worth its weight ten times over in gold. And gold is its color.

The amazing preventive and healing qualities of this root has been well documented in a lot of recent studies. It synergistically combines with other spices to create a powerful health aid for a variety of conditions.

Benefits of adding Turmeric to your daily diet:-

Avoid Alzheimer’s disease
Inhibit the proliferation of tumor cells
Inhibit the transformation of cells from normal to tumor
Help your body destroy mutated cancer cells so they cannot spread throughout your body
Decrease inflammation
Enhance liver function
Inhibit the synthesis of a protein thought to be instrumental in tumor formation
Prevent the development of additional blood supply necessary for cancer cell growth and more!

Most notably turmeric is known for its potent anti-inflammatory properties, which come from curcumin — the pigment that gives turmeric its yellow-orange color, and which is thought to be responsible for many of its medicinal effects. There are an estimated three to five grams of curcumin in 100 grams of turmeric.

Every acute painful condition you have has inflammation as part of why you feel pain. So think about gardening, household jobs, or even fun things like baseball, tennis and even golf. When you stress your muscles you create inflammation. Wouldn’t it be great to already have something in your system raring to go to those areas affected by strain to minimize or eliminate inflammation? This is called prevention.

Once you have inflammation, it is harder to decrease. It’s easier to prevent a forest fire than it is to control one. When you prevent inflammation from happening, damage doesn’t occur. When you control inflammation, damage has already been done. So, it is always better to prevent and having nutrients available for the body to use immediately goes a long way in the prevention process. You do not want to not have pain because that tells you when you have done too much. If you take painkillers you can damage the body because you are going beyond the body’s ability to heal as you go.

In India where turmeric is widely used, the prevalence of four common U.S. cancers — colon, breast, prostate and lung — is 10 times lower. In fact, prostate cancer, which is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in U.S. men, is rare in India and this is attributed, in part, to turmeric. Numerous studies have looked into this potential cancer-fighting link, with promising results. Indian people already have this amazing antioxidant in their system ready to fight and protect because they eat it daily. Turmeric is helpful for digestion, circulation, immune function and even nerve protection.

Growing evidence suggests that turmeric may afford protection against neurodegenerative diseases. Epidemiological studies show that in elderly Indian populations, among whose diet turmeric is a common spice, levels of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer’s are very low. Concurrently, experimental research conducted recently found that curcumin does appear to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s in mice.

Preliminary studies in mice also suggest that curcumin may block the progression of multiple sclerosis. While it is still unclear how it may afford protection against this degenerative condition, one theory is that it may interrupt the production of IL-2, a protein that can play a key role in the destruction of myelin, the sheath that serves to protect most nerves in the body.

Want more encouragement to add this herb to your daily intake? Curcumin, one of the active ingredients in turmeric, crosses the blood brain barrier! Research conducted at UCLA and published in the Journal of Biological Chemistry (December 2004), which has been confirmed by further research published in the Journal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry (April 2006), provides insight into the mechanisms behind curcumin’s protective effects against Alzheimer’s disease. Alzheimer’s disease results when a protein fragment called amyloid-a accumulates in brain cells, producing oxidative stress and inflammation, and forming plaques between nerve cells (neurons) in the brain that disrupt brain function.

The UCLA researchers first conducted test tube studies in which curcumin was shown to inhibit amyloid-a aggregation and to dissolve amyloid fibrils more effectively than the anti-inflammatory drugs ibuprofen and naproxen. Then, using live mice, the researchers found that curcumin crosses the blood brain barrier and binds to small amyloid-a species. Once bound to curcumin, the amyloid-a protein fragments can no longer clump together to form plaques. Curcumin not only binds to amyloid-a, but also has anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, supplying additional protection to brain cells.

As most of you already know, I own a small business in Tampa, Fl ( www.tunduree.com) specializing in fast casual Indian Cuisine. Over a month ago we were approached by a local agent by the name of Eric Bolli of the above mentioned company for an online couponing campaign through their website and email network (www.socialyum.com) . It was no different from scores of Groupon wannabes and other social media companies out there. After a brief analysis we decided to give them a try for a month for a fee of $199.95 after which we were free to choose if we wanted to continue with them depending on the results they generate.
I signed off on the paperwork for the trial run on May 03rd and gave them a check for $199.95 with a promise that they will run the advertisement the following month. They sent me the advertisement proof on the May 31st to be run on June on their website. To my utter horror the day they run the advertisement on their website (04th of Jun), they fraudulently debited my checking account for $2400 using the account and routing number from the check I had previously given them!
When I contacted both the local agent and their supposed corporate office, they were very unresponsive and evasive in refunding the charge. After a ton of phone calls and emails to them, One ‘John’ from the ‘accounting department’ calls me and tells me that he doesn’t appreciate the tone of my emails and therefore, he did a little more research on my file and has realized that all the charges to my account are legitimate and therefore will not be refunded !
In hind sight, they never intended to do any thing in the first place as they have never sent me any coupon redemption data, access to who bought the coupons or any such information till date.
I am currently spending my time and energy away from running my business and instead trying to get my money back from scamsters like these. Times are tough and I, along with my employees work twice as hard to earn every dollar and keep our business going so we can feed our families. It is really painful & frustrating to see that big companies like these can walk in and scam us and there is not much we can do about it as small players.
Please spread the word and inform every small business you know to stay away from all these clowns and If any of you have any better ideas/ suggestion to get back at these corporates PLEASE let me know. I have already filed a complaint with the Economic Crime Division, in the Attorney General’s Office,The FTC abd the BBB and also a fraudulent claim with my Bank.
UPDATE:-
-	I just got off the phone from Kim From Siam Thai in Tampa who also got conned into the same scam. All I want to do is to raise awareness in the local community so nobody else gets affected.
- I also spoke with the owner of www.coloniallanes.net, A Bowling Lanes Business based in Orlando, and realized that these guys feature random restaurants/ carwashes/ local businesses without their knowledge and sell their coupons online. These are the other local businesses which I have spoken to and are also affected:-
Tampa Tap Room- sports bar, Champinos in Lakeland, Angelinas Italian cuisine, Greek Island restaurant in Largo and Acaj Salon in Orlando.

And here is the best part:-
-	After a day of filing complaints and posting our experience on a few online forums, ‘John’ from the ‘Corporate Accounts Division’ of SocialYum called me on my cell phone and warned me not to ‘Tarnish’ their reputation in public forums as it is ‘illegal’ and they would take ‘Legal’ action. But as a ‘friendly advice’ he was letting me know that I was not adhering to the way things are handled in THIS COUNTRY !!
